My Secret Monster/Brynn Schintgen

I lived with a monster.
not the under-your-bed
or the hanger in the closet kind,
but a real, live monster.

She didn’t seem like one though;
her face was kind,
she gave the best hugs,
and told me that she loved me.

But then the monster would come out,
snarling and teeth bared,
she’d rip me to shreds,
taking great care to hurt me
in the spots she knew were most tender.

She’d howl at me, her roars thundering,
and all I could do was cower in the corner,
praying to God,
please make it stop.

Finally,
if I was a good little girl,
the monster would disappear,
her nightmarish face
contorting back to the person
I knew and loved.

Then she’d cradle me,
and tell me that she loved me
more than anything in the world,
and I would go to bed,

afraid

and alone.

Brynn is a current English major at St. Norbert College, and is scheduled to graduate in the spring of 2025. She has had a passion for writing as long as she can remember, and is thrilled that her poetry is being published for the very first time! In her free time, Brynn likes to paint, play the guitar, sing, and and spend time with family and friends. After graduating, she would like to either be a freelance writer or work in publishing.
