Half a Crumb for Later/Jack Ponx

What is a life worth if it comes from nothing?
Doesn’t come from ivory cars and mahogany wood tables
A life that comes from temptations of stealing your grandfather's gin
And ugly stares from strangers walking down the boulevard.

What’s that life worth that doesn’t give back
Because they grew up with crumbs and pennies
And needed all of theirs to survive?
Is it greed or just life itself that drives them?

What lives are blessed to have bread loaves and quarters?
Shouldn’t they be giving back more?
Share more than sharing disgusted stares
On the south side street corner?

What should the father walking out of prison,
Or the mother walking out of a twelve hour shift
          Be sharing?
Isn’t everything they give their newborn daughter enough?
Even if they only cut their crumbs in half to save for later?
