A Nightly Dog Walk/Chris Cornelius

Lightning bugs and fireflies
Lighting up the midnight sky
Flying high, flying low
In the evening moonlight glow
In the morning, wondering where they go

I walked this path many times before
In the sunshine
But now I walk at night with the dog
My mind races, my steps hasten
The route is dark, the dog is unsure
Time for a quick detour

East we go
Back to the lighted street and beyond
Past the light back into the dark air
We walk through patches of warm humid air
Followed by patches of cool air
I wonder how it all flows
I may never know, so

Lightning bugs and fireflies
Torching the evening sky
Flying high, flying low
Wondering where it is they go
Under the evening moon glow
I do know know
But I do enjoy the show

Chirping frogs, crickets and croaking toads
There's a wonderful song happening in the evening glow
Never do they sing during the day or in the hay
Only at night, when there is no light

Walking the dog
Past the woods, past the bog of singing frogs
Turning left, heading north
Enjoy the summer smells
Trees, water, and plants
Fields of corn, hay and beans
Feeling calm, steady, and sure
Xerxes and I love to explore
There is way more
The stars and clouds, high in the sky
The hazy moon and starry sky
The fresh night air makes me high

Then a howling animal scare
Walk no further, do we dare
About face, time to retrace
Past the singing frogs and the bogs
Back to the street light where a lone bat takes flight
Around the neighbor’s bright light
A car leaves a vacant lot
This is more than I sought
On a relaxing evening walk

Back to my drive
Safe and sound
Just me and my hound
In the yard
What do I see?

Lightning bugs and fireflies
Flying high, flying low
In the evening moonlight glow
